obama will be meeting with congressional leaders later today. nbc's danielle leigh joins us live with the latest on capitol hill. danielle, what is the datest in terms of what we can expect in the next coming days and the likelihood that they can reach a deal? >> reporter: mara, good morning. well, this meeting that is the last-minute meeting at the white house is going to be integral. they need to see progress in this meeting if they're going to get a deal done before midnight on monday. as you know, the senate came back early from the christmas holiday yesterday. but they didn't seem able to compromise. they continued the bickering. the house wasn't even here. they're not even in play yet. they're now coming back on sunday. so we really need to see congressional leaders see some kind of a plan that can be voted on before that december 31st deadline. lawmakers say it's getting decreasingly unlikely that's going to happen. many have serious doubts about whether or not they will get a deal before the new year, although it is still possible, many think a deal will more likely come

forward. but president obama i am told by this source essentially said to everyone at the meeting, look, if you put this to a vote in the senate and in the house, he believes it would pass. he gave mcconnell and reid about a day basically to come up with their own proposal, something that they believe would make it through both chambers, but interestingly, mcconnell said that he was optimistic in the wake of that meeting. reid said that he found the meeting to be constructive as well as did nancy pelosi. speaker boehner seemed to have a slightly different take, basically saying, look, we've already passed legislation in the house to deal with the sequester, to deal with some of these issues so why not revisit what was passed in the house? but the bottom line is the words that are coming out of this meeting, constructive, optimistic. there seems to be a little bit of movement. you always hesitate to say that because, of course, these talks could become derailed at any minute, but president obama set to address the press and the nation hopefully to give us a little bit of a better sense o

them the public's patience has worn out. after an hour-long closed-door meeting with the president, both the democratic and republican congressional leaders left the white house without saying a word. later, president obama weighed in. >> the american people are not going to have any patience for a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy. not right now. the economy is growing, but sustaining that trend is going to require elected officials to do their jobs. >> reporter: and back at the capitol, senate majority leader, harry reid, described the meeting as constructive. >> we're out of time. we've got to do it now. that's why the next 24 hours will be very important. >> reporter: a source familiar with the talks told nbc news the president reiterated the proposal he presented before leaving on vacation last week. calling for, among other things, a tax cut extension for those making $250,000 or less. and extending unemployment benefits that are set to expire. the source says the president is confident his plan can pass in both the house and senate if republicans allow a vote.

connell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith proposals from the republicans. president obama said after the meeting that he is modestly optimistic a deal can be reached, but as you can hear from senator reid, the president asked that if a deal between republicans and democrats cannot be reached, then the president wants just an up or down vote on what he wants, which is quite simply no income tax rates going up for people making $250,000 and under. and an extension of long-term unemployment benefits. and that's of course for the long-term unemployed as well as what's known as a dock fix which has to do with medicare payments to doctors. that's where we are. we don't expect anything big in the next 24 hours, but this is after all washington. right now, it's time for piers morgan tonight. >> tonight, tyler perry is a successful writer, director, actor. >> she told me you're the best interviewer in the world, so i'm worried. >> his movies have grossed over $600 million. >> it means i get to reinvest in what i do and i'm able to hire a lot more people. >> and he knows how to wear a dress. h
